Myrtle (Doering) Collins 96 years of age passed away on August 27, 2026 at Sandhills Care Center in Ainsworth, NE. On a cold winter night, February 9, 1930, a country doctor was called to the Dutch Hollow farm home of Howard and Amy (Casey) Doering in rural LaValle, WI. A baby girl, Myrtle Arlene, joined 2 brothers, Rolland and Alvin. Later Carl and Marjorie joined the family. She spent her life here going to Litz school, an excellent student, pretty much a tomboy especially loving softball and ice skating. Contrary to her wishes she never attended high school but helped others take care of their children. At the age of 17 she married Lyle Dunse and they had one daughter Lois. They also cared for several foster children. In 1955 due to her fathers failing health, they purchased the Doering farm which had been in the family for four generations. This marriage ended in a divorce in 1977. She worked many factory jobs to supplement the farm income besides working on the farm milking cows, driving tractor and farm machinery. In 1973 she had a desire to learn more about our Lord Jesus and his father Jehovah God. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on June 24, 1974. In 1978 she moved to Nebraska to help care for her aging parents. Wanting to have more time working in the ministry telling others about God’s Kingdom, she started her own cleaning business---cleaning commercial businesses in Ainsworth and Bassett. In 1982 she was privileged to attend pioneer school which was a highlight of her life. In May 1983, she married a kind and gentle man, Franklin Collins with 5 children. She never forgot her farm roots or WI home as their back yard boasted of a garden, fruit trees, a pond, berries, and flowers all planted by Myrtle. Many people became friends by her sharing her perennial flowers which grew profusely. She was also known for her hospitality and Sunday dinners, always room for three or more with plenty of food for all. And last but not least is Patchy her cat. She always said she didn’t like cats and especially not in the house. This little kitten left alone in the garage by its mother melted her heart and became a permanent resident. I have heard some say “if I believed in reincarnation I want to come back as Myrtle’s cat. I would like to be as spoiled by attention as Patchy was." She was known for her fabulous cooking and baking; mainly roast beef, Lasagna, and 7-minute frosting If someone had a special dietary need, she would make a separate dish or dessert just for them. She never went to visit her daughter and son in law without bringing a couple of apple pies for him. Then she would make a butterscotch pie while visiting for him to share with his brother. She loved her home state of Wisconsin and tried to come back each year to visit family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter Lois (Morris) Honer of Highland, WI. Her sister-in-law Darlene Doering of Loveland, CO. Many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is also survived by Frank’s children and their families: Franklin (Penny) Collins, Eileen Olson, Sidney (Vicki) Collins, Nathan Collins, Iva (Wayne) Bussboom. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, her brothers Rolland, Alvin (Mary), Carl Doering, and a sister Marjorie (Richard) Kneifel, and her precious cat Patchy. A special thank you to Cottonwood Villa and Sandhills Care Center for taking such good care of mom for these last several years. Also, a special Thank You to her nieces /nephews Robin, Renae, Andrea, and Mark along with their families for the special care given to mom over the years. A zoom memorial service will be held 3:30pm Sunday September 13, 2026 with officiant, Brad Dugan. Zoom I.D.: 358 032 8125 Password: 434712 Holmes Funeral Home in Valentine, NE assisted the family.
