Obituary for Evelyn Emma Castaway

On Wednesday, May 6, 2020, Evelyn Emma (Yellow Robe) Castaway, loving mother of five children, 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren, entered eternal rest at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 81.

Evelyn was born January 28, 1939 in Rosebud, SD to Cecelia (Yellow Robe) Hutchings and Harold Hix. She grew up in the Two Kettle area.

Evelyn worked as a CNA at the Bowers Nursing home and waited tables at Ruth Hix’s Café in White River, until she moved to Pierre in 1977. There she worked as a CNA at Missouri Valley and Maryhouse until her retirement. After retirement, she volunteered at Value Village and The Boys and Girls Club in Pierre. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Evelyn’s hobbies included crocheting and embroidering.

Evelyn lived in Pierre for 33 years, until her health started to deteriorate. She then moved to Sioux Falls, SD to an assisted living center. On May 29, 2017 she was moved to the Good Samaritan Village.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; brother Clarence (Butch) Hutchings; husband Edward Castaway Sr.; sons: Samuel and Edward Castaway Jr.; grandsons: Alvin Whipple and Louie Castaway; grandparents: Samuel and Margaret (Turning Hawk) Yellow Robe and numerous aunts and uncles.

She is survived by one sister Pearl (Hutchings) Rodicker, one son Victor Thomblinson; two daughters: Verbena (Castaway) Shook and Margaret Castaway and many grandchildren.
